2008 silver eagle with a reverse of 2007 coin
Hi guys,
I was just browsing the silver eagles on ebay and saw lot's for sale that said they were early 2008 coins with errors and the reverse is 2007. These are selling for 400.00 and up. Can someone post pictures of the differences of the backs of the 2007 coin and 2008 coin? I bought 100 sealed mint tubes when they were first available through apmex and now I am wondering if I might have lucked into these coins. I'd sure like to know the difference between the 2007 coin and 2008 coin. thanks |
Re: 2008 silver eagle with a reverse of 2007 coin
The easiest thing to look at is the letter "U" in United States of America on the back. On a 2008 it's meant to be a lower case: "u". If it is a capital "U" then you have the sought after expensive one. I'll give ya two for one... ;)
All other years are capitals I believe. No idea why they changed. There are 2 other differences harder to spot. Fwiw. |

"Ordinary" reverse on 2008: (slightly new look)

Re: 2008 silver eagle with a reverse of 2007 coin
Interesting to note that the error occurred with the Burnished W mint coin sold directly by the US Mint to collectors. As far as I know, it did not occur in the coins sold through its regular distribution channel such as rolls sold by companies like APMEX. I could be wrong, but if so, it would be the first time since 1978.

I did well on the 20th anniversary sets too...bought 10 @ $100 a piece and sold 9 mostly for $500. I cherry picked the best of the bunch to keep (1) set for prosperity. Ya have to take some profits along the way! I'm waiting to see how I did on selling all my platinum $50/$60 higher ago. I'll be back in at $1600...maybe? |

thanks guys, I will check em right now and let you know. I'm not getting my hopes up now since I didn't buy them direct from the mint but it's worth a shot.

AAARRRG No luck! I opened the end of my tubes and I had the 2008 coins. I looked at about 5 coins, all 2008 reverse. Oh well.

Prices continue to rise. In my opinoin this coin is (and has been since its release) a winner with great potential as it slowly appreciates over time. A sale on E-bay yesterday of more than $800 for a graded NGC 70 regular brown label. Now that's not bad!

Re: 2008 silver eagle with a reverse of 2007 coin
People really will not pay the premium unless they are first strike. Sold mine on ebay the second they came in. They crack so easily

Re: 2008 silver eagle with a reverse of 2007 coin
ebay doesnt seem to have many sellers of them so i figured maybe they'd be good to sell.
seems like they are on ebay for about $460 per roll. i wonder how much it costs per roll to seal. |
Re: 2008 silver eagle with a reverse of 2007 coin
Unless you have an unopened box with proof of sale, you will not be able to get the "first strike" designation on the pcgs container. People only pay higher for that bit of ink on the side... :)
